Crafting

So I always see things and think “I can make that!” and always have high hope of being crafty. It almost never happens though. However this past Christmas I was looking for gift options for my BFF. He loves Star Trek so I went that route and started my search on Amazon. (Side Note: Matt and I both hate store shopping so if we can get it on Amazon, you better believe we will!).

I found the perfect Star Trek mug and iPhone cover. Both simple and not over done. Then I saw one of those “Keep Calm and . . . ” signs that was geared toward Star Trek with the “and” being “Boldly Go.” I thought that’s perfect for his office. He works at one of the big hospital systems here and is the director over Medical Staff Services. That meaning that he is always, always, ALWAYS stressed over something. Keeping calm is something that he definitely need to be reminded to do.

Seeing the sign  I thought “I can make that!” All I needed was a canvas, some paints and a little time!

The example I saw- I’m not artistic enough to have the ship so mine will just have the words.

I went and gathered all my supplies which consisted of  black and silver/gray paint, a square canvas, scrapbook letter stickers, mod podge and a paint brush. Sorry no picture of the supplies but I’m sure you can figure out what all that stuff is 🙂

1. I painted the canvas gray/silver and let it dry, then placed my on top of the paint.

2. painted the whole canvas black over the letters.

3. Let dry

4. Peeled up the letter and fixed and spots where the paint bled under the stickers

4. Covered in Mod podge. The one I used had glitter in it because I already had it from another project and I figured it would make it look like stars in space.

5. Once completely covered I let it dry for a few hours.

6. Finished Product!!
When the mod podge dried I realized that having it also over the letters made it hard to ready because the glitter was reflecting in the light. I repainted over the letters so that they would stand out more.
And after delivering the final present which I can only assume was a hit! This was my friends post on Facebook!!
